Fergusson, James

Architectural historian of India and the middle east; wrote survey of western architecture.  Austen Henry Layard (q.v.), as commissioner of works in Gladstone's cabinet,  appointed Fergusson  in 1869 to create a new plan of London public buildings.  The tax-cutting of Parliament scuttled these plans.
